A subject on speakers and placements

What is a speaker?

Speaker is a piece of electro-mechanical equipment that produces sound from electric impulses. When you play your music, the amplifier converts electricity into electrical impulses, and when connected to speakers, the cone vibrates, and you hear the sound.

2.0 vs. 2.1 systems.

As you have seen, some speakers have just two cabinets, and others have three cabinets—one big and two small. The big one is called a subwoofer. In 2.0 systems, two speakers produce all the sound. At times, they aren’t efficient in reproducing bass notes. But why does it still in the market? There are a couple of advantages for a subwoofer less system.

  • Portability
  • Sound

With just two speakers, you can keep it on the desk and forget about it. There is no real estate necessary for the subwoofer. It comes handy for laptop users.

There is a separate fan base for 2.0 simple stereo setup. The point is wrong subwoofer placement can cause lousy bass. Sometimes it is boomy or muddy. Hence leaving the subwoofer out of the equation gives great-sounding music minus some low frequencies.

Some prefer bass to the sound and don’t care much about the quality of bass. Hence came the 2.1 system with subwoofers. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the bass from the subwoofer is of low quality. It just means that the placement of the subwoofer is critical. The bass is stripped away from the main speakers and played back on the subwoofer, which has a larger speaker inside. Hence the bass is a bit more pronounced.

Placement of the speakers:

Placement plays a critical role in how the speaker sounds. Earbuds don’t have this issue. It sits right into your ear and emits sound. That nullifies the acoustic effect the room might produce. Click to know more about the best earbuds under $30. Unlike earbuds, speakers interact with the room and listeners. Hence placement is important.

In both 2.0 and 2.1 systems, the speaker placement is identical. The left speaker should be on the left side of the desk, and the right speaker should be on the right side of the desk. It will be even better if you could raise the speaker platform to your ear level. If this is impossible, at least tilt the speakers pointing at the ears. This gives proper imaging and great sound quality.

Placing the subwoofer:

Placing the subwoofer and integrating it with the main speakers is one tough job. Fortunately, the crossover for computer audio is preset, and there is no need to fiddle around with frequency settings. All you have to do it is to place it well.

The crawl method

It is an excellent way to place the subwoofer. Put the subwoofer on your chair. It will be even better if you can place it on the ear level over the chair. Now play some bass music. Play a piece of heavy bass music; you crawl on the floor to find a spot where the bass is beautiful and sure sounding. Mark the position and transfer the subwoofer to that spot. Now you have a proper sounding 2.1 system.

Conclusion

Although Logitech Speaker System Z323 is the best speaker under $50, no matter what the speaker is, the music in itself is enjoyable. Some like 2.0 systems. But a well placed 2.1 setup will blow the 2.0 system out of water. As a legend said, Its now how you listen to but what you listen to matters.
